Some well used abbreviations for VOIP

  • BRI = Basic Rate Interface, this is ISDN with 2 x 64Kbit/s (Europe) or 2 x 65 KBit/s (US)
  • PRI = Primary Rate Interface, this is professional ISDN with 31 or 30 channels (from 32) with 64KBit/s (Europe) or 24 channels (from 26) with 56KBit/s (US)
  • codec = the compression and decompression of digital data
  • SIP = session interface protocol between IP voice gateways
  • SS7 = signaling protocol 7 for PSTN communication from voice switch to voice switch or its periphals
  • G.729 = the well used (or mostly used) codec for VOIP compression
  • POTS = plain old telephone service = old wired anlaloque phone system
  • PBX = private branch exchange = private voice switches in small and medium companies or enterprises
  • PSTN = Public Switched Telephone Network = the AT&T or British Telecom or German Telecom voice switch network
